Abstract

Az obszervatóriumként szolgáló Csiga (El Caracol) négyszögletes platón álló henger alakú épület a gömbkupolához felvezető csigalépcsővel. A háromszintes épület csillagászati megfigyelő helyiségének ablakait úgy helyezték el, hogy látni lehessen a Holdat legmagasabb és legalacsonyabb delelésekor. A maják a folyosót megvilágító napsugár beesési szöge alapján határozták meg a nap-éj egyenlőségek időpontját. Chichén Itzá romvárosa az UNESCO kulturális világöröksége. | El Caracol (The Snail) used to be an astronomical observatory. It is a cylindrical building on a rectangular platform with a spiral staircase leading up to the spherical dome. The windows of the astronomical observation room in the three-storey building are positioned so that the Moon could be seen at its highest and lowest crossings of the meridian. The Mayans determined the moment of the equinoxes by the angle of incidence of the sunlight illuminating the corridor. The ruined city of Chichén Itzá is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
